Engagement Session | Catching Waves with Caitlin and Ed in Newport, RI

It’s not often that a couple requests the use of surfboards for a photoshoot, so when a young bride-to-be first approached me to see if I was interested, my answer was obvious: yes! For their engagement shoot, Caitlin and Ed were eager to return to the waters of Newport, Rhode Island where their story first began. This beautiful couple met while surfing and were excited to incorporate the passion that brought them together into their engagement photos.
Caitlin and Ed are a lovely and easygoing couple and we had a great time shooting together! At first, most couples usually feel a little uneasy in front of the camera because they’re not used to it, but because my style is very laid back, it never takes long for them to start having fun. They were so relaxed and natural which made for some great candid moments! I really enjoy engagement sessions like these because it gives me a chance to get to know the couple ahead of time so they can learn my approach with the camera and feel totally comfortable on their wedding day. This session took us along the coast Newport County, which is one of my favorite areas to shoot wedding and engagement photos because of all the breathtaking ocean views. I’m excited to return in October for Caitlin and Ed’s wedding at the Ocean Cliff Hotel which is just one of the many beautiful spots Newport has to offer! Our first stop of the day was St. George’s School in Middletown, a gorgeous private campus overlooking Second Beach and Sachuest Bay. Our second location was just down the road at Purgatory Chasm, which, despite the ominous-sounding name, is a beautiful hidden gem of Rhode Island that offers some stunning panoramic views the ocean. This state may be small, but it is full of so many unique scenic areas like these that are fantastic for photos!
We landed at our final destination, Second Beach, around 7 p.m. where Caitlin and Ed finally got to break out their surfboards. This was definitely my favorite part of the session and I had a great time shooting something so unique and fun! Capturing this couple in the water where they first met was a wonderful experience and I love that it gave me the chance to try something new and creative. I can’t wait for their wedding in October!
